Lake Country Pads Decoded: HDO, CCS & Wool | Pro Guide

Every detailer has a shelf of compounds and a favorite polisher. Ask which pad they reached for and the answer gets fuzzy — "the orange one," or "whatever was clean." That is where correction jobs go sideways. The pad is the part of the system that touches the paint. It decides how much abrasive stays on the working surface, how much heat builds under the panel, and whether you finish down clean or spend another hour chasing haze you created.

Lake Country builds buffing pads in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and their line is organized like an engineer laid it out. Here is the whole system, decoded: what HDO means, what CCS actually does, and which pad to load for which job.

HDO: Built For Long-Throw Machines

HDO stands for Heavy Duty Orbital. Modern polishers throw a big orbit — 15mm and 21mm are the shop standard now — and a conventional thick foam pad flexes and squirms under that motion. Flex becomes friction, friction becomes heat, and heat is what hazes paint and kills pads.

Lake Country's fix is a patented dual-layer construction with a tapered edge. Per Lake Country, the dual layers reduce lateral movement inside the pad, cutting internal friction so it runs cooler and resists foam fatigue. The tapered edge prevents rolling and keeps rotation consistent, and a center ventilated cooling channel pulls heat out of the middle where it collects worst. The line is built for long-throw polishers specifically — if you run a RUPES BigFoot LHR15 Mark V, an LHR21 Mark V, or a FLEX XFE 15 150, this is the architecture built for your machine.

CCS: The Dimples Are Not Decoration

The pocked surface on a CCS pad solves the most-ignored problem in polishing: conventional foam drinks polish. Most of what you prime with sinks below the working face, where it does nothing but waste product. CCS uses strategic patterns of partially closed foam cells that hold polish in pockets and release it gradually as the operator needs it.

Two things follow. Your polish works longer per prime, and — because the pockets reduce surface tension against the paint — the pad stops skipping and stays flat. Anyone who has fought a grabby pad across a hood knows what that is worth.

PRO NOTE — read the color, not the marketing. Lake Country's HDO CCS foam runs a clean aggression order: Blue = heavy polishing, Orange = polishing, Black = finishing. Blue is the most aggressive foam in the family — not a finishing pad. Need real cut above that and you step off foam entirely, onto microfiber or wool.

The Foam Lineup, Job By Job

Sizing is simple: the pad face should overhang the backing plate by roughly half an inch. A 5.5" pad on a RUPES Precision Pro 5" backing plate, a 6.5" pad on the 6" plate. Undersize it and you expose the plate edge to the paint. Oversize it and the pad rolls.

When Foam Runs Out: Microfiber And Wool

Foam has a ceiling. Past it, fiber does the work.

  • HDO Microfiber Light Cutting One-Step Pad (OSP). The production detailer's pad, built to correct and finish in a single pass. The tapered HDO profile lets you tilt slightly and work contoured panels without the pad rolling off the edge.
  • HDO Microfiber Polishing Pad. A dense microfiber face over a medium-density foam interface. It pulls out haze, light swirls, and oxidation, and the shorter uniform fibers resist matting so cut stays consistent through the cycle — the pad to refine with after heavy compounding.
  • Premium Low Lint Prewashed Knitted Lambswool Pads. Knitted lambswool on a foam interface — real cutting power with far less linting than traditional wool. On a DA it is the heavy-compounding choice, outcutting microfiber, and it finishes clean enough to run as a one-step on gelcoat.
  • Double Side Twisted Wool Buffing Pad 8" x 1.5". Rotary territory — twisted wool for heavy compounds, with a 5/8"-11 threaded insert for double-sided pad adapters. This comes out for a badly oxidized panel or a sanded repair.

Rotary And Big-Panel Pads

Body shops, truck fleets, and equipment work still run rotaries. The Better Edge Rotary Black Finishing Foam Pad is a purpose-built rotary finisher — Lake Country rates it cut 2/10, finish 10/10 — with an 8.5" face on a 7.25" backing and a beveled edge that lets you buff on the edge as well as the flat. That bevel gets you under mirrors, handles, and trim; the recessed back keeps an exposed plate off the paint.

For long pulls on big flat panels — semi hoods, sleeper sides, combine cabs, RV walls — the Waffle Pro Pads 8" use convoluted foam so air flows under the working face and releases heat. The same texture cuts surface friction, which stops skipping and lets an operator hold the pad flat.

Marine Master: Pads For Gelcoat

Gelcoat is not clear coat. It is thicker, softer, and it chalks instead of swirling, so boat and RV work gets its own line. Marine Master uses the same CCS pocket technology in a form built for hulls.

Matching Pads To Chemistry

A pad does not correct paint — the abrasive does. The pad decides how that abrasive gets presented. Match them and the system works; mismatch them and you fight the panel.

On the Koch-Chemie side, Heavy Cut H9.02 is the cutting step (rated abrasion 9.0, gloss 6.0) and wants wool or the most aggressive fiber you have. Fine Cut F6.01 is the medium step at cut 6.0, gloss 7.0 — a microfiber polishing pad or the blue HDO foam is the right partner. Micro Cut M3.02 is the finishing step at cut 3.2, gloss 9.0, and it belongs on black finishing foam. Run that order backwards and you will chase holograms all afternoon.

Malco's Epic system follows the same logic in body-shop terms: Epic Heavy Duty Compound removes up to P1500 sand scratches, Epic Medium Duty Compound handles up to P2500, and Epic Finishing Polish is the diminishing-abrasive final step. Heavy Duty earns wool or microfiber, Medium Duty runs on blue or orange foam, Finishing Polish goes on black — and Malco states the Epic formulas work with all pad types, so the system forgives a short pad bin.

DO NOT SKIP THE WIPE-DOWN. Compounds carry oils that hide what you actually did. Strip each section with Koch-Chemie Panel Prep Spray on a clean Rag Company Eagle 600, then inspect under a real light like the SCANGRIP Sunmatch 4. Half the "coating failures" we hear about are polish oils sealed under a coating.

Keep Them Alive

Most pads die early from neglect, not use. Clean on the fly every panel or two — a loaded pad stops cutting and starts smearing spent abrasive across the clear. Wash them at the end of the job; a Dirt Lock in the bottom of the bucket traps the grit you pull out so it does not settle back into the foam. Dry face-up, never in a hot dryer, and never store a damp pad compressed.

The Bottom Line

The system is easy once you stop thinking about colors and start thinking about jobs. Long-throw machine? Run HDO. Want your polish to work longer and your pad to stay flat? Run CCS. Foam out of cut? Step up to microfiber, then wool. Working gelcoat? Marine Master. Then match the pad to the abrasive — cut with cut, finish with finish — and the process gets repeatable instead of lucky.
