What your detailing chemical actually costs per vehicle

Most shops know their price per gallon. Very few know their price per vehicle — and those are completely different numbers.

A $20 gallon is not automatically cheaper than a $100 gallon. Once dilution ratio and real-world usage enter the math, the ranking can flip entirely. That is the number this calculator exists to give you.

Why price per gallon lies to you

Product A: $20 a gallon, used straight. Product B: $100 a gallon, diluted 20:1. The shelf says A wins by a mile. The math says otherwise.

The "expensive" gallon is four times cheaper on every single vehicle. Across 1,000 vehicles, that is a $1,900 swing — in favor of the bottle that looked like the splurge.

How dilution ratios actually work

A ratio written 20:1 means 20 parts water to 1 part concentrate — 21 total parts, not 20. This trips up a lot of people and it matters: treating 20:1 as 20 total parts makes your mix about 5% stronger than the label intends, which is money down the drain and, on some chemistry, a real risk to the surface.

Manufacturers do vary in convention. When the label and the math disagree, follow the label. This tool is here to price your usage, not to override the directions on the bottle.

Chemical cost is only part of your cost per job

A product that costs $0.50 more per vehicle but saves five minutes of labor is almost always the cheaper product. At a $25/hour loaded labor rate, five minutes is $2.08 — four times the chemical difference.

Before you switch products to save money, ask:

  • Does it need more dwell time or more agitation?
  • Does it require a second product to finish the job?
  • Does it streak, flash, or leave residue you have to correct?
  • Does it perform the same in July heat and January cold?
  • Is it consistent batch to batch?
The Bottom Line

The cheapest gallon is almost never the cheapest product.

The goal is the lowest cost per finished job — chemical, labor, and rework included — not the lowest sticker on the shelf.

Overuse is the silent cost

Two extra ounces of finished product per vehicle feels like nothing. At 25 vehicles a week it is 2,600 ounces a year — over 20 gallons of finished product given away, and you would never see it on an invoice.

Measure once. Fill your bottle, do three vehicles, see what you actually used, then divide. Guessing at this number is how shops end up 30% off on their real chemical cost.

Auto, ag, and marine are not the same math

Most cost-per-car tools assume a passenger vehicle. Our customers wash combines, sprayers, semi tractors, boat hulls, and gel coat — where a single unit can consume 5 to 20 times the product of a sedan.

  • Agricultural equipment — heavy soil loads usually mean a stronger dilution and far more finished product per unit. Price your combine wash per unit, not per "vehicle."
  • Marine — hull cleaners and gel-coat compounds are often used at or near full strength. Enter 0:1 in the ratio field for those.
  • Fleet — the per-unit number matters most here, because it multiplies by every truck, every wash cycle, all year.

Frequently asked questions

Does 20:1 mean 20 total parts or 21?

21. Twenty parts water plus one part concentrate. This calculator uses 21 total parts, which matches how nearly every manufacturer writes it.

How do I calculate a ready-to-use product?

Enter 0 for the water side and 1 for the product side, or tap the "Ready-to-use" chip. The tool then treats every ounce you use as concentrate.

How much concentrate goes in a 32 oz bottle at 10:1?

2.91 oz of concentrate and 29.09 oz of water — about 86 ml and 860 ml. The Mixing Guide tab gives you this for any bottle size and ratio.

Is the cheapest gallon the cheapest product?

Usually not. A concentrate diluting 20:1 can cost five times more per gallon and still be dramatically cheaper per vehicle. Use the Compare tab to check any two products side by side.

How many gallons of ready-to-use product does a gallon of concentrate make?

At 20:1, one gallon makes 21 gallons of finished product. At 10:1 it makes 11. At 4:1 it makes 5.

Should I add water or concentrate first?

Water first, then concentrate. It prevents foaming and gives you a proper mix without agitating the bottle.
