P&S Detail Products Decoded: Double Black | Pro Guide

P&S is the brand sitting behind the counter in shops that have been reconditioning cars for thirty years. It does not shout, and it does not launch a new hero product every quarter. What it sells is a working bench — an interior system with a real step order, a paint protectant that behaves like nothing else in the category, and a few specialty bottles that solve one problem completely. Here is the P&S line we stock, decoded, with the manufacturer’s own claims and the parts most people get backwards.

P&S has served the professional detail trade since 1961, out of Hayward, California, as part of the Appearance Technology Group. Bill Phillips founded it after five years selling reconditioning chemicals out of the back of a station wagon; he took the IDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 and entered the IDA Hall of Fame in February 2021. Sons Bob and Dave run it now — Dave started on a sales route in 1979 and was formulating product by 1986.

Nearly everything worth knowing runs through the Renny Doyle Double Black Collection. Doyle is a thirty-year veteran of this trade, and P&S credits him with a pivotal role in the creation and growth of the line — he did not found the company and he did not formulate it. Double Black is not a marketing tier. It is the professional line, and it is where the step numbers live.

The Interior System: Enzyme First, Degreaser Second

This is the most useful thing in the P&S catalog, and the thing shops most often run backwards. P&S assigns exactly two step numbers in its whole lineup, and both are interior.

Step #1 — Terminator Spot & Stain Remover. A ready-to-use, broad-spectrum enzyme package built to attack organic fat, starch, and protein stains in carpet, upholstery, cloth sport seating, and interior fabric. No dilution. Enzymes need time and contact to do biological work, which is why this goes down first.

Step #2 — Carpet Bomber Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner. Citrus derivatives, biodegradable cleaning agents, and water-based solvents. P&S rates it full strength for the worst work and diluted for lighter duty. It runs well past carpet — mats, vinyl, engines, wheel wells, painted surfaces — and it rinses clean, which is what matters in an extraction workflow.

WHY THE ORDER IS NOT OPTIONAL. Terminator is the enzyme; Carpet Bomber is the surfactant and solvent package. Run the degreaser first and you flush the enzyme out before it has done any biological work. P&S is explicit: Terminator prepares the surface, then Carpet Bomber follows. Enzyme, then degreaser. Every time.

Xpress Vs Swift: Two Different Finishes

These two get confused constantly because both are interior cleaners. They end in different places.

Xpress Interior Cleaner cleans leather, vinyl, plastic, rubber, and other interior materials without discoloring or drying them out, and leaves an original OEM finish — never glossy, never artificially shiny. Lease return, fleet cab, any customer car where the interior should look factory rather than dressed: Xpress is the bottle.

Swift Clean & Shine is the all-in-one. It pulls dirt and grime off leather, vinyl, and plastic and leaves a conditioned, dressed appearance in the same pass. Shake well, spray onto the surface or onto a wax applicator or scrub pad, scrub as needed, remove the excess, wipe to the finish you want. One pass instead of clean-then-dress — the right call on express interiors.

For the grimy end before either one — door jambs, rubber liners, a combine cab out of a bean field — Koch-Chemie Mehrzweckreiniger (MZR) is the alkaline intensive cleaner we reach for, dilutable 1:5 to 1:50. Finish hard plastics and seals with Koch-Chemie Top Star for a semigloss, antistatic, UV-stable result. Full interior breakdown is in Best Interior Detailing Products.

Frostbite And Crystal Wash: Know The Difference

P&S Frostbite Surface Cleanse Snow Foam is the pre-wash: thick, clinging foam that penetrates crevices, lifts road salt, and encapsulates dirt so the rinse carries it off instead of your mitt dragging it across the clear. Through an iK Foam Pro 2 it is a no-touch first pass on anything from a show car to a Midwest winter daily.

P&S Crystal Wash is the one people mislabel. It is a general-strength industrial fallout remover that crystallizes as it dries, breaking fallout particles free physically and chemically — fallout, rust deposits, pollution particles. It is not a color-changing iron bleeder. If the purple bleed is what you want, that is Malco Iron Blaster 2.0: neutral pH, red to purple as it dissolves contamination, 3 to 4 minutes of dwell on a cool surface out of direct sun, never allowed to dry, then a thorough high-pressure rinse. Two different tools — do not substitute one for the other.

Behind both, the wash itself: Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam for the pre-soak, Koch-Chemie Nano Magic Shampoo in the bucket. Full decon sequence is in How to Clay Bar a Car.

Bead Maker: What It Is And What It Is Not

P&S Bead Maker Paint Protectant built the brand’s reputation outside the pro trade, so be precise about it. P&S describes polymer technology: surface-migrating molecules attach to the paint, then cross-link and polymerize into a hydrophobic protective layer, with UV absorbers and stabilizers for the ultraviolet side. Spray-on, works on wet or dry paint, rated for all exterior surfaces including glass, trim, and wheels. Full cure is approximately two hours depending on ambient conditions. It is not an SiO2 product and we do not sell it as one — P&S makes a separate SiO2 protectant for that job. Calling Bead Maker a ceramic spray misrepresents the chemistry and sets a customer up for the wrong durability.

THE TWO-HOUR WINDOW. That cure is not a suggestion — it is the difference between a layer that cross-linked and a layer that got rinsed off half-formed. Do not hand the keys back into rain, do not run it through a tunnel, do not stack another product on top before it sets. Laying it on a wet car is what makes it fast; the cure is what makes it last.

On a corrected panel, strip first so the polymer has bare paint to attach to: Koch-Chemie Panel Prep Spray, or Malco Epic Ceramic Final Prep Wipe when a true ceramic coating is going down next — Malco calls it the critical last step before Epic Ascend, sprayed on and wiped with a clean ultra-soft edgeless microfiber. For a maintenance topper, Koch-Chemie Spray Sealant S0.02. Buff with an Eagle 600 Grey and keep a Premium Glass & Window Towel on the glass so you are not chasing residue.

Triple S: The Wrap And PPF Shop’s One Bottle

P&S Triple S Wrap Install Solution earns its shelf space three times in one job. Slip, on prep: wiping the surface down eliminates sanding and adhesive lines and lets even difficult films slide across it. Slide, on install: sprayed on the squeegee buffer so it moves scratch-free across the film. Shine, post-install: wiped over the wrap to enhance it and leave a protective finish. Commercial wraps, color change, PPF — one bottle instead of three. Decant it into an iK Multi TR1 for a chemical-resistant trigger and mist-to-stream control in the install bay.

Rags To Riches: The Step Shops Skip

Your towels are consumables you have chosen to reuse, and household detergent is what kills them. P&S Rags To Riches Microfiber Detergent is a concentrate built for commercial volume and rated safe for all microfiber types — it deep cleans, restores, softens, and brightens towels you already paid for. A shop burning a stack of Creature Edgeless towels every week gets that bottle back in towel life alone. Weave-by-weave guidance is in The Rag Company Towel Guide.

Where P&S Sits Next To Koch-Chemie And Malco

No one brand does everything. Koch-Chemie owns the correction and wash-chemistry side of our shelf — polishes, foams, sealants, and the exterior all-purpose work Green Star handles. Malco owns compounds, ceramic coatings, and the heavy-duty end. P&S earns its spot on interior reconditioning, on Bead Maker, and on specialty bottles nobody else covers as cleanly. Detail bay, express tunnel finish line, marina recon shop, fleet interior crew: the P&S bench slots in next to the German chemistry without overlapping it.

The Bottom Line

Learn three things and you will use this line correctly. Terminator before Carpet Bomber, always. Xpress for OEM, Swift for dressed. Bead Maker is a cross-linking polymer with a two-hour cure, not a ceramic. Everything else is a specialist that does one job completely — exactly what you want from a brand that has been listening to detail shops since 1961. Every surface. Every season. Every machine.
