Water spots are the most common complaint a wash bay ever fields, and one of the most misunderstood problems in detailing. They are not dirt. They are minerals — and that is exactly why the usual soap-and-water answer never touches them.
Here is how the pros handle water spots: identify which kind you are fighting, dissolve the deposits with the right chemistry, polish out what the chemistry cannot reach, and then fix the back end of your wash routine so they stop coming back. Know Your Enemy: Deposit or Etch?
When a drop of hard water dries on paint, the water evaporates and leaves its dissolved mineral load behind — mostly calcium and magnesium scale, plus whatever salts were riding along. That crusty white ring sitting on top of the surface is a mineral deposit. Left baking in the sun, the story gets worse: the drop concentrates as it dries and can chemically mark the surface underneath, leaving a faint crater you can still see after the mineral is gone. That is an etched spot, and it lives in the finish, not on it.
The distinction decides your whole plan of attack. Deposits dissolve — that is a chemistry job. Etching has to be leveled out — that is an abrasive job. Run your fingertip across a spot after washing: if you can feel crust, start with chemistry. If the surface is smooth but the ghost of the ring still shows, you are polishing.
Step 1: Wash It Clean First
Never attack water spots on a dirty panel — you need to see what you are actually fighting, and you do not want to grind road grit around under a towel or pad later. Run a proper wash: foam, dwell, rinse, contact wash.
