By the third week of harvest a combine cab is its own ecosystem. Grain dust packed into every seam, chaff down behind the seat, hydraulic film on the armrest, and a windshield you look through for fourteen hours with the sun on the horizon. That is not a cosmetic problem — it is a visibility problem, an air-quality problem, and a resale problem. Here is the order our ag guys run it in.
This is the interior job; the outside of the machine is covered in How to Clean Farm Equipment. Do the cab last, so you are not tracking a fresh load back up the ladder.
What Makes A Cab Different
A pickup interior gets dirty. A cab gets loaded. The dust is organic — fine enough to hang in the air, coarse enough to jam a seat rail. There are touchscreen monitors that will not tolerate a standard dressing, and a cab air filter doing real work. Treat it like a machine you are servicing, not a car you are detailing.
DRY FIRST. ALWAYS. The most common mistake is hitting a dusty cab with cleaner before the dust is out. Grain dust plus liquid equals paste, and paste goes into the grain of the plastic, the stitch lines of the seat, and the bottom of every switch.
Step 1: Strip It And Blow It Out
Pull everything that comes out — mats, seat cover, whatever collected behind the buddy seat. Open both doors and work the dust out of the cab, not around it. The The Rag Company Ultra Air Blaster V2 is the vortex gun for it, built to blow dirt, sand, and debris out of carpet, upholstery, and plastics at 4.0 CFM and 90 PSI off a 20-gallon compressor. Around a crowded console, a Guardair PalmJet Safety Air Gun and its OSHA-compliant nozzle lets you aim one-handed while the other holds the vacuum hose.
Work top down — headliner, A-pillars, dash, seat, floor pan last — blowing from the back of the cab toward the door. Then vacuum the seat rails, the gap behind the seat back, and the mat channel. Run a Detail Factory Octane Interior Scrub Brush through the vents and switch banks while everything is still dry.
Step 2: Deal With The Cab Air Filter
This is what separates a cab clean from a car clean. A pressurized cab stays clean only because the filter and door seals are doing their job. If the filter is loaded, you are cleaning the same dust twice a week and breathing the rest. Service it exactly how the operator's manual says — filter service is machine-specific, and one cleaned the wrong way stops sealing at the frame. Check the door seals while you are there.
Step 3: Hard Surfaces, Top Down
For a routine cab, Koch-Chemie Multi Interior Cleaner is the ready-to-use bottle: spray, let it react a short time, wipe with a cloth or soft brush, rework with fresh water. Koch-Chemie lists upholstery, fabrics, floors, and plastic trim as its areas of use — that is a cab, end to end. Two standing rules: do not let it dry, and do not use it on hot surfaces. Park in the shade first.
For a cab untouched since spring, step up to a concentrate. Koch-Chemie Mehrzweckreiniger (MZR) is the alkaline intensive cleaner rated for carpets, upholstery, roof linings, plastics, and industrial machinery, carries Daimler approval, and dilutes 1:5 to 1:50 by soil. Koch-Chemie Green Star is the other route, and the one most farm shops already stock for exterior work: a phosphate- and solvent-free alkaline concentrate with a published interior-and-textile range of 1:10 to 1:20, separate from its 1:5 to 1:30 exterior range. It is VDA class A conform at a maximum 5-minute reaction time and 1:3 concentration — a ceiling, not a working ratio.
Spray from an iK Multi TR1, the chemical-resistant trigger sprayer built for water-based cleaners, nozzle on mist. Work a panel, wipe a panel, with a The Rag Company RGB All-Purpose Terry. Running a citrus APC instead? Malco Prizm Gold APC is the d-limonene concentrate Malco lists as safe on OEM paint, aluminum, vinyl, and fabrics, at published ratios of 1:10 for vinyl and plastic and 1:15 for carpet and upholstery.
Step 4: Grease, Diesel And The Floor Pan
The floor pan, step plates, and seat base take grease and diesel straight off gloves and boots. Interior cleaner smears it; you want a degreaser. Malco Little Red Thunder is the ready-to-use, non-caustic, aluminum-safe route — spray it on the soil, let it stand several minutes, scrub to loosen, rinse thoroughly. One published warning to respect: do not spray it onto metalized plastics, because spotting can occur. For the pail on the shop floor, Malco HD Red Degreaser is the heavy-duty option built for cars and engines. Wipe it out rather than flooding it — there is wiring and usually a fuse panel under that floor. Controlled product, clean towels. Not a hose.
Step 5: Seat, Mats And The Stains
An air-ride cloth seat holds more dust than anything else in the cab. Koch-Chemie Pol Star is the pH-neutral cleaner with a protection formula for leather, alcantara, upholstery, and carpet, diluted 1:5 to 1:20; it preserves the original waterproofing and leaves no water marks. Work it in along the fibers, then pull residue back out with a damp cloth or wet/dry vac. Check colorfastness on a hidden panel first.
For set-in spots, Malco Oxy Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is a peroxide-based, ready-to-use formula aimed at dye- and tannin-related soils. Malco Carpet Plus is the aerosol foam that leaves no sticky residue and can be applied horizontally — which matters when the stain is on a cushion, not a floor.
Machine agitation beats a hand brush on a full seat. A Lake Country Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Pad has brush-like fibers and a tapered edge and runs on a DA, forced-rotation, or rotary polisher; the 3.5-inch also fits a drill. Lake Country's guidance: avoid it on leather, suede, and alcantara. With shop air, a Tornador Black mists and agitates in one pass across dash, door panels, upholstery, carpet, and seat seams — it needs 5 CFM at 85 psi.
Step 6: Glass Is A Safety System
A cab has glass on all four sides plus the roof hatch, you run into low sun morning and evening, and dust film on the inside of that windshield turns direct light into a wall. Clean it twice — once early to pull the film, once at the very end.
Koch-Chemie Glass Cleaner is ready to use: spray undiluted, wipe off, and the 5L jug is right when you run six machines. Malco Pink Mist is the ammonia-free concentrate if you mix your own — Malco's published ratio is 1:17 with clean water, and ammonia-free means safe on tinted windows. Two towels always: The Rag Company Diamond Glass Towels work wet or dry, and the Autofiber Glass Perfect Towel 3PK is the zero-streak weave for the final buff.
Step 7: Protect Without Glare
Koch-Chemie Top Star is the care emulsion for consoles, interior trim, and rubber seals: UV protection, a long-lasting semigloss natural sheen, Daimler approval, and antistatic — the whole point in a dusty cab, because it slows how fast the dust comes back. Spray onto a soft sponge, apply evenly, let it dry, wipe with microfiber.
THE DISPLAY AND PEDAL RULE. Koch-Chemie is explicit on Top Star: do not use it where slipperiness is undesirable — pedals, steering wheel, tires — and do not apply it to displays or polycarbonates. In a modern cab that puts the yield monitor, the guidance screen, and every polycarbonate lens off the dressing list. The same warning runs on Koch-Chemie Refresh Cockpit Care. Screens get a clean, dry microfiber and nothing else.
For the floor and rubber mats, Koch-Chemie Gummifix is built for exactly this — non-greasy, silicone-oil-free rubber and plastic care made for foot mats and plastic floors where slip resistance is necessary. For the seat, Koch-Chemie Allround Textile Sealant is the water-based, solvent- and fluorocarbon-resin-free sealant for seat covers, rated up to 24 months. Pre-clean with Pol Star or MZR, dry fully, apply between 10 and 40 degrees Celsius, and allow up to 24 hours to cure — do it the night before you park the machine.
Last, the smell. Malco Odor Sniper is the fragrance-free eliminator that neutralizes odor compounds instead of covering them: check colorfastness, hold it 8 to 12 inches off the surface, mist liberally onto the source. For a musty HVAC system, Malco calls for running the AC on high and spraying into the exterior cowling with the system not set to recirculate. For a deeper problem, the Bio-Bombs Vehicle Deodorization Kit releases chlorine dioxide gas to eliminate odor rather than mask it.
The Bottom Line
Dry before wet, top before bottom, filter before chemistry, glass twice. Multi Interior Cleaner or MZR for the panels, Pol Star for the seat, a real degreaser for the floor pan, Gummifix where you need grip and Top Star where you do not — and nothing at all on the monitors. Do it properly once at the end of harvest and next spring is a blower and twenty minutes. Stocking the shop? Start with Best Interior Detailing Products.
